Heard it through the grapevine: Brian Kelly

Charlie Weis may not know who Notre Dame's football coach is going to be next season, but it seems that many others "in the know" at the University understand that it will be Brian Kelly, currently head coach at the University of Cincinnati. If my contacts at Notre Dame are to be believed (and I do believe them), it's all but a done deal at this point, with no announcements coming until the end of the football season for the Irish and the Bearcats.

Take the rumor for what it is worth. I am sorry I can't be more specific with my sourcing. But until I see factual news reports proving otherwise, I'll be sleeping very well at night knowing that Coach Kelly will be leading the Irish next season.

I trust your sources, I just am inclined to think nobody really knows yet. I think he is the best choice our there, or perhaps optimal is the right word.

I do think Charlie knows, or if not told has read the hand writing on the wall.

Very interesting. Still sickened by our play, but am fearful of the repercussions of blowing up yet another coach. However, if this comes to fruition, I'd feel better.

Tired of hearing that ND can't compete (I guess the fans journalists of today don't research history at all because this was the same BS every Irish fan heard in the mid 80s).

Truth be told, if ND were 10-0 right now, we wouldbn't be worrying about being in the top 2. So we could use that to lure a great coach from a team who can't get that invite because of the color of their uniforms...

I hope you're correct, but I'll believe it when I see it. One of my friends told me about two weeks before we hired Weis that, per my friends "source," we were a 5-star lock to hire Mike Shanahan.

Again, I hope you're right and I would be ecstatic with Kelly. His resume up to this point is extremely similar to that of Urban Meyer's circa 04/05. He's had great success at every level. While I prefer more of a pro-style offense, his offenses score a sh!tload of points. The Cincinatti QB's "in and win" comment shows that Kelly knows how to build a program. Imagine what kind of talent he'll bring in with the ND name behind him on the recruiting trail. I hope he brings a decent D coordinator with him. Thoughts on Kelly's defenses?

I think we just have to be confident in Swarbuck, cause really the root cause of these disasters was White.

Swarbuck is the real deal.

Hope you're right, but it looks like they are keeping it pretty lo-pro if it is true:

Sources inside ND told me Charlie was resigning at the Tuesday presser....Rumors abound. Loose talk at this point can only hurt. Spreading rumors is the devils work! Please just the facts.

I hope Brian Kelly stays in Cincinati. His family loves it there and why wouldn't they? He has lifted the entire local economy and he knows it. Besides the trustees of UofCincinati are bending over backwards to get him all the things he made as conditions of his staying; practice fields, new facilities, and his contract. Admittedly, ND has all those things and can, even after Charlie's buy-out, pay a competitive salary. I think the burden of propping up the entire Mishiwauka economy is too much to put on a guy who's there to coach football, but ND keeps doing it, to coach after coach after coach. No wonder they crash and burn. Ara was right, there's too much pressure.

I hope the next coach is Urban Meyer. I think he will not want to hang around after Tebow, and I think with a national championship under his belt he has met the basic requirement of any coaching job- what's next. He needs a new challenge. Adn frankly, there's no bigger challenge than re-building ND to say, the 1966-1973-1977 level of perennial powerhouse.
I also think he can handle the pressure. He has been to South Bend -assitant under Hotz- and knows what he'd be getting into with the locals.

Sorry, OC. I need to agree with Roland here. Everyone seems to have a "source" embedded deep within the Gug/Administration Building/Athletic Department/Regis Philbin Performing Arts Center at this time of year. I seriously doubt anything is set in stone this early. Let's leave the rumor-mongering to those who do it best, the knobs at the network that shall not be named.

You have sources that most people don't have but, I still think that there is a cloud over Kelly as a replacement for CW.
I keep reading that there is a skeleton in the closet.

Looks like Swarbrick is on his way out too as the next President of the NCAA.

JUST DON'T GIVE HIM 30 MILLION DOLLARS FOR STARTING 7-1 AND LOSING TO USE BY A POINT

Guys, lighten up! Rumors are fun. They give us hope, keep our waning enthusiasm from disolving altogether, make us feel like there is light at the end of this dark tunnel. They are only the devils work if you give him the credit. Perhaps we should call it speculation with "attitude" rather than rumor mongering. Let's face it, we all feel like the successes and failures of OUR university are a reflection on us personally. Especially when we have to spend so much of our energy defending ND to our friends across the country who love to hate us!!

As Brady " Quinn said, it's tough to pin point why the IRISH slipped nationally".. However they cracked the top 25 this year. Quinn regarding his belief that the school would be making a mistake firing Weis/ stating.."Personally
I think there are a lot of circumstances that play into a season like this. an opportunity to have an opportunity with the guys." {quotes from Tom Withers, AP, from the LCSun-News}

CORRECTION ¡ For the end of last quote: " Hopefully he'll have an opportunity to have another year with the guys" To me this would be the best decision.. 'JACK'
